April Showers bring May Flowers and all of the Food Days of May!
The month of May is National Hamburger, Barbecue and Salad Month and don’t forget – Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby are this coming weekend. Mother’s Day is coming as well and we will be talking about delicious inspirations to treat Mom on next Tasty Tuesday.
Want to make everybody happy at the barbecue? Topping bars can be used for any type of barbecue – Foodies Unite did a great post for chicken breasts on the barbie!
Is Grilled Fish and Mango Salsa more your style? Thanks to the Hungry Goddess for a great How to Grill Fish, plus a mango salsa topper.
Tossed salads, macaroni salads, potato salads – you have to have some tasty sides for the barbecue.
Cookin’ Canuck has some of my faves:
and truly … Chocolate Fudge Brownies with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting from Brown Eyed Baker seem like a great way to wrap up a great day!
May 5 – Cinco de Mayo – time to get your Mexican on and celebrate all of the yummy tastes from South of the Border!
Food Network has kindly provided us with an entire page dedicated to Cinco de Mayo and all of the different recipes:

To add a festive atmosphere, let the kids decorate and stuff a traditional pinata for fun!
May 6 – Beverage Day – time to roll out the summer recipes and that means lemonade and/or iced tea for everyone! Paula Deen has the Perfect Lemonade – a great treat for the whole family.
May 11 – Eat What You Want Day – what an awesome holiday! Eat what you want day means a wild card – time to turn the kitchen over to the kiddos. Give them a chef hat, let them make their own shopping lists and set them loose to be creative culinary geniuses!
May 15 – National Chocolate Chip Day – chocolate chip cookies have been a staple from my childhood to making them for my kiddo and is there any other recipe besides the traditional Tollhouse Cookie recipe that we all grew up with? Pour me a glass of cold milk and I am good to go!
May 20 – Pick Strawberries Day – this holiday evokes more summer memories for me of picking our own strawberries in a farmer’s field and then delivering them to my Grandmother so she could bake them up into the most delicious pie ever! I am not a pie baker, unfortunately, so I live vicariously through those that love to bake and Mother Thyme has a Strawberry Pie to die for!
May 24 – National Escargot Day – I had to include this day of celebration since I adore escargot. Seriously. LOVE THEM. In my opinion, butter, garlic and white wine are all that is needed to make a delicious escargot dish; and a loaf of french bread – SUPER lovely! Have a local French Restaurant? Make a reservation!
Epicurious has the traditional recipe for Escargot à la Bourguignonne from 1949 which has the wine, dry white wine, shallots, garlic and all the delish items that you need to make this amazing dish!
May 31 – National Macaroon Day – “is a sweet confectionery made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring. The macaroon is commonly filled with buttercream or jam filling sandwiched between two cookies. Its name is derived from an Italian word “maccarone” or “maccherone””. I love the colors of the macaroons but I have always been slightly intimidated by the recipe. The find of the day for Tasty Tuesday are the Raspberry Coconut Macaroons from Smitten Kitchen – from the color to the flavor combo – they make me smile!
4virtu wishes you a wonderful May and stay tuned for our Mother’s Day post coming next week!
