On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…A partridge in a pear tree – Partridges make tasty chicken-like focal points for a holiday meal so we suggest: Partridge with Pear Puree and Parsnips from Aiden Byrne on the Good Food Channel in the UK. On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Two turtle doves – I have a slight aversion to eating pigeons, the family from which turtle doves originate. I do, however, love turtle so Mock Snapper Turtle Soup it is from Foodies Unite!
On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Three French hens – we will stick with Cornish Hens for the third day and the recipe for Cornish Hens with Cornbread Stuffing from the Barefoot Contessa is simple and elegant!
On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Four calling birds – the calling bird is the blackbird and the nursery rhyme goes that they would bake a blackbird in a pie. I much prefer other things baked into my pies at Christmas – don’t you? Sugar Plum Pie from Zoe Bakes seems like the perfect Christmas Pie and will definitely keep us singing!

On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Six geese a-laying – the tradition for a Christmas Goose is far more prominent in the UK and Europe than in the USA but if you are looking for a new Christmas tradition that dates back hundreds of years then your goose is cooked (so to speak.). On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Seven swans a-swimming – roasting a goose satisfied my roasting urges so no need to roast the swan. I am not even sure you CAN roast a swan. I would rather be inspired by their beautiful white coats and offer up a Pistachio and Cranberry White Chocolate Bark from Brown Eyed Baker – yummm!
On the eighth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Eight maids a-milking – milk is the best not only for Santa to wash down his cookies but as a side for so many of the Christmas treats! An interesting combo of ingredients spices up this alternative to traditional rice pudding – Bulgur Wheat and Vermicelli Milk Pudding from Kiran Tarun!
On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Nine drummers drumming – a puppy drum is a small redfish and Emeril Lagasse has a Shrimp-Creole Smothered Puppy Drum recipe that will keep the drummers marching all night long!
On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Ten pipers piping – piping hot and smokey from the other kind of pipes (we are taking a bit of license) and I thought the Hearty Lentil and Black Bean Soup with Smoked Paprika from Cookin’ Canuck would make a lovely addition to any winter day!
On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Eleven ladies dancing – cocktails always get the ladies dancing and this recipe for a Blue Sparkling Star from Daydreamer Desserts would be just the starter for the dance floor! Look at that color!
On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…Twelve lords a-leaping – good food makes men want to leap so when I saw the recipe from Pioneer Woman for French Onion Soup Stuffed Mushrooms, I almost wanted to leap! Instead, I added it to my Christmas Day appetizer list!
